High Valley On The Combine

John Deere lunch kid and a thermos full of Kool Aid

September harvest and I missed another school day

14 hours worth of work and dirt were lessons learned

Waist deep in those fields of gold

7 tons of steel and a twelve year old

Working hard just to keep it in a straight line,

On the combine

Hand me down overalls and an a.m. radio

Tried to get it right the first time and take it slow

Alabama singing “In A Hurry” and “I Don’t Know Why”

Black clouds and it starts to rain,

Running short on time and outta faith

Nothing you can do but pray for the sun to shine,

On the combine

Every time I climb that ladder

It takes me back to things that matter

Eighty acres and a Friday night

First date dinner in the cab beneath the moonlight

Cushion on a five gallon pail riding shotgun

Time goes by like those waves of grain

But I remember it like yesterday

Where I fell in love for the first time,

On the combine

Every time I climb that ladder

It takes me back to things that matter, ooh-oh

Working hard just to keep it in a straight line

Nothing you can do but pray for the sun to shine

Where I fell in love, in love for the first time

[x2]

On the combine

High Valley Have I Told You I Love You Lately

So many things runnin’ through my head

All too often, they go unsaid

Sometimes it seems this crazy world

It’s takin’ its toll on you and me, girl

Have I pulled you in tight, gazed into your eyes

Stolen you away, whispered your name, oh baby

Have I told you I love you lately?

Have I held you in my arms, kissed you in the dark

Got down on my knees, showed you how I need you baby?

Have I told you I love you lately?

I know, I know it must have been a while

Since I brought on that pretty smile

I know you heard me say these words

Oh but I’m hopin’, one more time won’t hurt

Have I pulled you in tight, gazed into your eyes

Stolen you away, whispered your name, oh baby

Have I told you I love you lately?

Have I held you in my arms, kissed you in the dark

Got down on my knees, showed you how I need you baby?

Have I told you I love you lately?

Have I pulled you in tight, gazed into your eyes

Stolen you away, whispered your name, oh baby

Have I told you I love you?

Have I held you in my arms, kissed you in the dark

Got down on my knees, showed you how I need you baby?

Have I told you I love you lately?

Have I told you I love you lately?

High Valley Dear Life

Dear Life, I hope you know

I’ve loved you every mile down this road

Had my share of hits and misses

Tryin’ to keep between the ditches

Dear Life, I hope you know

Dear Life, what’s your plan

Is where I’m suppose to be, right where I am

If it is, then I’m not leavin’

If it ain’t, then I’ll keep on dreamin’

Dear Life, what’s your plan

Now you’re flying by too fast

I’m about to make you last

I’m beggin’ on you please, just slow down

You’re scaring me to death

I’m tryin’ to catch my breath

Don’t wanna let you go

I’m hangin’ on for dear life

Oh oh dear life

Hangin’ on for dear life

Oh oh dear life

Dear Life, how’s it look

When you read the next few pages of my book

Am I with the ones I love

Down here or up above

Dear Life, how’s it look

Now you’re flying by too fast

I’m about to make you last

I’m beggin’ on you please, just slow down

You’re scaring me to death

I’m trying to catch my breath

Don’t wanna let you go

I’m hangin’ on for dear life

Oh oh dear life

Hangin’ on for dear life

Oh oh dear life

Now you’re flyin’ by too fast

I’m about to make you last

I’m beggin’ on you please, just slow down

You’re scaring me to death

I’m trying to catch my breath

Don’t wanna let you go

I’m hangin’ on for dear life

Oh oh dear life

Hangin’ on for dear life

Oh oh dear life

I wanna leave my mark

Love til it breaks my heart

Live so loud that my forever

Echoes in the dark

I wanna leave my mark

Love til it breaks my heart

Live so loud that my forever

Echoes in the dark

You’re flyin’ by too fast

I’m about to make you last

I’m beggin’ on you please, just slow down

You’re scaring me to death

I’m tryin’ to catch my breath

Don’t wanna let you go

I’m hangin’ on for dear life

Oh oh dear life

Hangin on for dear life

Oh oh dear life

High Valley Every Week’s Got A Friday

Every town’s got a main street

Every soul’s got a heartbeat

Every kid’s got a wild dream

So chase it til it comes true

Every day’s got a sunrise

Every first kiss got butterflies

Every life’s got a moment

That you never forget

Baby this could be it

Every week’s got a Friday

Here’s to running wild

Like a wild child

Burning down a highway

Here’s to living it up and letting it go

Everybody let the music play

Feel it ricochet, rock the night away

Every week’s got a Friday

Every week’s got a Friday

Everybody’s got a 9 to 5

Everybody’s got to get by

And everytime I see you

You take me to a good time

Every truck’s got 4 wheels

Every farm’s got a wheat field

Every county’s got a dirt road humming by the riverbank running

Yeah tonight we’re coming alive

Every week’s got a Friday

Here’s to running wild

Like a wild child

Burning down a highway

Here’s to living it up and letting it go

Everybody let the music play

Feel it ricochet, rock the night away

Every week’s got a Friday

Every week’s got a Friday

Every town’s got a main street

Every soul’s got a heartbeat

Every week’s got a Friday

Here’s to running wild

Like a wild child

Burning down a highway

Here’s to living it up and letting it go

Everybody let the music play

Feel it ricochet, rock the night away

Every week’s got a Friday

Every week’s got a Friday

Friday burnin’ down the highway

Let the music play rock the night away

Friday burnin’ down the highway

Let the music play rock the night away

Friday burnin’ down the highway

Let the music play rock the night away

High Valley Why God Made A River

We all need a place where we can go

Time slows down and the world turns slow

Feet get wet when the night gets hot, you know

You know a place your worries won’t get to

You look down, still see the moon

So dark that all that we can do

Is hear each other whisper

That’s why God made a river

Sent these waters rushing through

Like a waterfall from heaven washing over me and you

Where the stars come out and you see them shine

Shimmer in the water and in your eyes

Way out here there ain’t no lights but those

While everybody else is fast asleep

No one’s more awake than me

I can feel the current keep pulling us in deeper

That’s why God made a river

Sent these waters rushing through

Like a waterfall from heaven washing over me and you

That’s why God made a river

I can feel it flowing through

Like a waterfall from heaven washing over me and you

Makes me think of that

Black and white picture up on the shelf

Great grandma standing with the preacher’s help

Waist deep Caney Fork 1912

Cause we can’t save ourselves

That’s why God made a river

Sent these waters rushing through

Like a waterfall from heaven washing over me and you

That’s why God made a river

Can you feel it flowing through?

Like a waterfall from heaven washing over me and you

Oh oh oh oh…

That’s why God made a river

High Valley Exactly What I Didn’t Want To Happen

My life used to feel so safe and secure

Bein’ on my own independent and self-assured

Didn’t need nobody to complicate my life

Then like a bolt out of the blue

You caught my eye…

And that’s exactly what I didn’t want to happen

One look was all it took and that was it

Yeah, you came along with a love so strong

My heart didn’t stand a chance when you flashed that

Tell me where ya been all my life kind of grin

And that’s exactly what I didn’t want to happen

But I’m glad it did

Yeah, I used to stay home watch TV by myself

Didn’t have to share my remote control with anybody else

I used to find peace of mind in my solitude

Now I’m goin’ crazy every minute without you

And that’s exactly what I didn’t want to happen

But you and me had to be a perfect fit

Yeah right from the get go I couldn’t let go

Lookin’ in your eyes it felt so right

I said I want some more of this

And that’s exactly what I didn’t want to happen

But I’m glad it did

I wasn’t livin’ til I found your love

I didn’t know that what I really needed was

Exactly what I didn’t want to happen

Exactly what I didn’t want to happen

Yeah you came along with a love so strong

My heart didn’t stand a chance when you flashed that

Tell me where ya been all my life kind of grin

And that’s exactly what I didn’t want to happen

But you and me had to be a perfect fit

Yeah right from the get go I couldn’t let go

Lookin’ in your eyes it felt so right

I said I want some more of this

And that’s exactly what I didn’t want to happen

Exactly what I didn’t want to happen

Exactly what I didn’t want to happen

But I’m glad it did,

Oh I’m glad it did

And that’s exactly what I didn’t want to happen

But I’m glad it did

High Valley A Father’s Love

For the longest time he was the kind I just didn’t understand

Hard to read and hard to please, yeah that was my old man

On the day I left for college, it was nothing new

We never had that heart to heart, he had too much to do

He checked the air in my tires, the belts and all the spark-plug wires

He said “When was the last time you had this oil changed?”

And as I pulled out the drive he said, “Be sure to call your mom sometime”

And I didn’t hear it then but I hear it now

He was saying “I love you,” the only way he knew how

A hundred twenty thousand miles and 6 years down the road

Brand new life, a brand new wife, we just bought our first home

When he finally came to visit, I thought he’d be so proud

He never said he liked the place, he just got his tool belt out

And put new locks on the doors, went back and forth to the hardware store

He said “Come and hold this flashlight”, as he crawled beneath the sink

“These old wires ain’t up to code and that circuit box is gonna overload”

And I didn’t hear it then but I hear it now

He was saying “I love you”, the only way he knew how

But on Sunday we all gathered for his 65th birthday

And I knew he’d stiffen up, but I hugged him anyway

It was finally time to say goodbye, I knew what was next

Just like he always did right before we left

He checked the air in my tires, the belts and all the spark-plug wires

Said “When was the last time you had this oil changed?”

And as we pulled out the drive he said, “Be sure to call your mom sometime”

And I wish I knew back then what I know now

He was saying “I love you”,

He was saying “I love you”, the only way he knew how

High Valley Plastic Jesus

Bouncin’ on the dashboard

Boppin’ to the beat

To every bump in the road

Every hole in the street

Bought him at the Walmart

Got ’em on sale

The last one sittin’ on the dusty shelf

It’s just a tiny figurine…

But are we missin’ what it means…

We got crosses on our necks

And Bibles in hand

When the sun comes up

We make our own plans

Pull Him out when we need Him

Put Him back when we’re done

That ain’t no way to treat God’s only Son…

If we only wanna hear him

When His word will please us

Then we might as well be prayin’ to a

Plastic Jesus

Ol’ Miss Jackson

At the end of the block

She built her life

Upon that rock

Everyday of the week

She walks that walk

And when she goes to speak

The spirit talks

It do us some good to heed that warning

It ain’t just about Sunday morning

We got crosses on our necks

And Bibles in hand

When the sun comes up

We make our own plans

Pull Him out when we need Him

Put Him back when we’re done

That ain’t no way to treat God’s only Son…

If we only wanna hear Him

When His word will please us

Then we might as well be prayin’ to a

Plastic Jesus

Lord, knows we’d be better off

If we could just surrender all…

We got crosses on our necks

And Bibles in hand

When the sun comes up

We make our own plans

Pull Him out when we need Him

Put Him back when we’re done

That ain’t no way to treat God’s only Son….

Got crosses on our necks

And Bibles in hand

When the sun comes up

We make our own plans

Pull Him out when we need Him

Put Him back when we’re done

That ain’t no way to treat God’s only Son….

If we only wanna hear Him

When His word will please us

Then we might as well be prayin’ to a

Plastic Jesus

I need You Jesus

High Valley Fathers And Sons

It’s barefoot and baseball, battle-scar stitches

Hot dogs and pep talks, in between pitches

Unspeakable things that a mom’s never done

Some things should stay between fathers and sons

It’s holding ’em back while you’re letting them go

Trying to teach what you don’t really know

So you watch and you pray to see what they become

It just runs in the blood between fathers and sons

No flowers or dolls, unless you can burn ’em

It’s all car parts and guitars and the backyard learning

Saying good night with an I love you punch

Just the way that it is between fathers and sons

It’s holding ’em back while you’re letting them go

Trying to teach what you don’t really know

So you watch and you pray to see what they become

It just runs in the blood between fathers and sons

I’m a cowboy, an outlaw, an ace with a gun

A preacher, a teacher, a seeker of fun

The scariest thing that I’ve ever done

Is taking my place among fathers and sons

It’s holding ’em back while you’re letting them go

Trying to teach what you don’t really know

So I’ll watch and I’ll pray to see what you’d become

I’ll try to soak up the moments while you’re still young

Kingdoms and castles can all come undone

Ain’t nothing stronger than fathers and sons

No there ain’t nothing stronger than fathers and sons

High Valley Memory Makin’

I wanna take your hand, put it in mine

Take that key, put it in drive

Drive all night, after no man’s land

Draw our names in the desert sand

No reservation

No-no hesitation

Just you and me, memory makin’

Do you believe that this ain’t meant to be?

Follow this feeling, come find it with me

We’re dreaming, we’re chasing

Memory makin’

Tonight’s gonna be a 8×10, black and white

Burning so beautiful in my mind

So crazy and messed-up

Gonna walk so badly that it hurts

Baby, we’re diamonds

You know, when we’re timeless

Our hearts are waiting on memory makin’

Do you believe that this ain’t meant to be?

Follow this feeling, come find it with me

We’re dreaming, we’re chasing

Memory makin’

Bottle-up the moment

Living like you own it

Writing our story

Yeah-ehh, yea-ehh

Bottle-up the moment

Living like you own it

Writing our story

Yeah-ehh, yea-ehh

Do you believe that this ain’t meant to be?

Follow this feeling, come find it with me

We’re dreaming, we’re chasing

Memory makin’
