Mark Wills Squeeze Box

I’m slippin’ into Slidell, the boys and me

Take a left at the Texaco, gonna see Sweet Marie

She plays down at Jimbeaux’s Gumbo and Washtub

In calico and barefeet in a band called the Mudbugs

I been workin’ up my never and I can hardly wait

Tonight when she asks for request

I’ll stand up and say

[Chorus:]

I wanna be your squeeze box

Always at your fingertips

I wanna be your blues harp

A little closer to your lips

Let me be your washboard

You can play me fast or slow

Squeeze box, blues harp, washboard baby

Anything you can hold

[Instrumental]

Got a bucket full of crawfish, a seat on the front row

Just to sit this close to her, it’s like a shot of tabasco

Makin’ trips to the tip jar, keep it full of dollar bills

Tonight I’m gonna go for broke, show her just how I feel

One way or another, Lord, she’s gonna notice me

If I have to jump up on that stage

and get down on my knees

I’ll be beggin’ her please…

[Chorus:]

Let me be your squeeze box

Always at your fingertips

I wanna be your blues harp

A little closer to your lips

Let me be your washboard

You can play me fast or slow

Squeeze box, blues harp, washboard baby

Anything you can hold

Squeeze box, blues harp, washboard, baby

Anything you can hold…

Mark Wills 19 Somethin’

Saw Star Wars at least eight times

Had the Pac-Man pattern memorized

And I’ve seen the stuff they put inside

Stretch Armstrong (Yeah)

I was Robert Staubach in my backyard

Had a shoe box full of baseball cards

And a couple Evil Knievel scars

On my right arm

I was a kid when Elvis died

And my momma cried

It was 1970 somethin’

In the world that I grew up in

Farrah Fawcett hairdo days

Bell bottoms and eight track tapes

Lookin’ back now I can see me

Oh, man. did I look cheesy

But I wouldn’t trade those days for nothin’

Oh, it was 1970 somethin’

It was the dawning of a new decade

We got our first microwave

Dad broke down and

Finally shaved them old sideburns off

I took the stickers off of my Rubik’s Cube

Watched M-TV all afternoon

My first love was Daisy Duke

And them cut-off jeans

Space Shuttle fell out of the sky

And the whole world cried

It was nineteen eighty-somethin’

And the world that I grew up in

Skatin’ rinks and black Trans-Ams

Big hair and parachute pants

And lookin’ back now I can see me

Oh man, did I look cheesy

I wouldn’t trade those days for nothin’

Oh it was nineteen eighty-somethin’

Now I’ve got a mortgage and an SUV

But all this responsibility

Makes me wish

Sometimes

That it was nineteen eighty-something

And the world that I grew up in

Skatin’ rinks and black Trans-Ams

Big hair and parachute pants

And lookin’ back now I can see me

Oh man, did I look cheesy

I wouldn’t trade those days for nothin’

Oh it was nineteen eighty-something

Nineteen seventy-something

Oh, it was nineteen somethin’

Mark Wills Jacob’s Ladder

Jacob was a dirt poor farm boy

Raised at the fork in the road in a clapboard house

And Rachel was a land baron’s daughter

Born with a silver spoon in her mouth

Her daddy said he wouldn’t stand

For Rachel to waste her life with a common man

He tried hard to keep them apart

But you can’t draw lines in a young girl’s heart

So late one night by the harvest moon

Jacob climbed a ladder up to Rachel’s room

He knew his place, it was right beside her

Step by step up to her world

Head over heels for a brown-eyed girl

And gettin’ caught didn’t seem to matter

‘Cause heaven was waitin’ at the top of Jacob’s ladder

It’ll be five years September

Since her daddy found the ladder and a note on her windowsill

He swore he’d never forgive them

But nothin’ melts a heart like a grandchild will

Now she climbs up on his knee

Says, “Grandpa tell a story, the one about me”

He thinks back and his eyes shine

Says, “Listen child, once upon a time”

Late one night by the harvest moon

Your daddy climbed a ladder to your mama’s room

He knew his place, it was right beside her

Step by step up to her world

Head over heels for my little girl

And here you are, that’s all that matters

‘Cause heaven was waitin’ at the top of Jacob’s ladder

Oh, an angel was waitin’ at the top of Jacob’s ladder

Mark Wills Love Can’t

Drip, drop, down it came from the

Roof top, morning rain, hope it

Don’t stop it’s been a long dry spell, well, I’m

Pretty sure it’s a sign we need to

Call work and tell a white lie, sayin’

Head hurts, you’re not feeling too well

C’mon baby, let the world carry on without you

Right this minute ain’t nobody need you more than I do

[Chorus:]

Hey, we need a little fixing

There ain’t nothin’ love can’t

So what do you sayin’

We pull the covers over

Get a little closer and

Do some catchin’ up

A little you know what

It’s all about us today

The world can wait

But love can’t

Don’t you miss having the time for a

Long, kiss, you know, the kind where your

Hearts skips and leads to other things, why don’t I

Lock up, you get the shades, never mind

I don’t want to waste One touch, I’m where I want to be

With you next to me

[Repeat Chorus Twice]

Mark Wills Closer

I woke up thirty three, not quite where I thought I’d be

Fell short of a lot of dreams and expectations that are put on me

A lot of those things I thought I’d need

Don’t mean as much as I thought they’d mean

I sure got far away from where I’d say I’d be today

But I’m closer to right where I should have been

To the man I really am and to the friends who call me friend

And I’m even closer to the woman that I love, to my faith in God above

I’m still not sure exactly where it is I’m goin’

But I’m closer, little bit closer

Well, I guess at some point that switch turned off

And I stopped being the man I’m not

But counting on what I ain’t got

And I found a faith somewhere I lost

And got closer to right where I should have been

To the man I really am and to the friends who call me friend

And I’m even closer to the family I left behind

And that world I’d thought I’d find

When I left it thinkin’ there was something more

Yet I’m closer, closer

I woke up thirty three, not quite where I thought I’d be

Closer to right where I should have been

To the man I really am and to the friends who call me friend

And I’m even closer to the woman that I love, to my faith in God above

I’m still not sure exactly where it is I’m goin’

But I’m closer, closer, I’m gettin’ closer

Mark Wills Like There’s No Yesterday

Dance, like you’ve never been hurt, like you’ve never been sad, baby

Dance, like this beautiful moment is all that’s you have

Don’t be afraid all your waitin’ is over

Just look in my eyes and not over your shoulder

Don’t let one memory get in your way

Baby, dance like there’s no yesterday

If you’ve been lost, if you’ve been wrong

If you’ve been broken and left all alone

If you’ve seen night, you thought wouldn’t end

If you felt like you don’t have any friends

This is your time, this is your chance

To dance like you’ve never been hurt, like you’ve never been sad, baby

Dance, like this beautiful moment is all that you have

Don’t be afraid all your waitin’ is over

Just look in my eyes and not over your shoulder

Don’t let one memory get in your way

Baby, dance like there’s no yesterday

Baby, dance like there’s no yesterday

There’s no place you’ve been

That matters a bit anymore

Tonight, we begin

And it’s all about love, baby

All about love so just

Dance, like you’ve never been hurt, like you’ve never been sad, baby

Dance, like this beautiful moment is all that you have

Dance, like you’ve never been hurt, like you’ve never been sad, baby

Dance, like this beautiful moment is all that you have

Don’t be afraid all your waitin’ is over

Just look in my eyes and not over your shoulder

Don’t let one memory get in your way

Baby, dance like there’s no yesterday

Baby, dance like there’s no yesterday

Baby, just dance

Like there’s no yesterday

Like there’s no yesterday

Mark Wills I’ll Be Around

Saw your picture in the morning paper

Bet your mama sure is proud

You finally found you a real straight lacer

All your dreams are finally getting’ buttoned down

Girl, you know that I know you to well

Before you cut the cake, before you ring that bell

[Chorus:]

I’ll be around, around about the time

You’re wishin’ for a Firday evening with the ragtop down

I’ll be around, around like a second hand tickin’

In the nick of time, let me make you mine

When you long to feel the wind in your hair

When your choices seem a little too square

I’ll be around

I’ll be around

Girl, you never did like vanilla

You were more of the rocky road kind

You hated princes and cinderallas

Gravitated more to Bonnies and Clydes

Girl, I wish you happiness

But if you ever find that the shoes don’t fit

[Repeat Chorus]

Girl, you know that I know you too well

Before you cut the cake, before you ring that bell

[Repeat Chorus]

Girl, I’ll be around

Mark Wills In My Heaven

In my heaven there ain’t no lawyers

Don’t need names on dotted lines

Folks do business like they oughta

A good firm handshake works just fine

We feed lawyers to the lions

In my heaven there ain’t no children

Totin’ loaded guns to school

Ain’t such thing as peer pressure

Being who you are is cool

We still teach that golden rule

[Chorus:]

In my heaven we hurt no one

No lying, crying, or dying young

No one’s lonely, no one’s scared

And everyone is welcome there

In my heaven

In my heaven I can sing like Elvis

Play guitar like B.B. King

Slide a fastball past Hank Aaron

Hey now, batter, batter swing

I can do most anything

[Repeat Chorus]

I know that it’s God’s decision

What my heaven’s gonna be

I ain’t telling him his business

But if he left it up to me

Then in my heaven

There’s football with no referees

Then in my heaven

There’s never been an injury

In my heaven

Angels yodel when they sing

And in my heaven

The fish will bite most anything

In my heaven

In my heaven

Mark Wills Crazy Being Home

He almost forgot how to drive over here

While he tried to survive a year over there

Some young punk just flipped him off

And ran him off of the road

He just turned 22 last week

In the back of a strike somewhere in Tehran

He never thought he’ll live to be this old

It’s crazy being home

It’s crazy being home

He stepped off a plane

Feels like yesterday

They were waving flags and signs with his name

They said they were proud for what he’d done

If they only knew what he had become

The girl he loved she swore that she’d wait

But he came home to a cold empty place

Had a burger today, got a new cell phone

It’s crazy being home

The stars all look the same

He still answers to his name

It’s OK, something just ain’t right

It’s right to fight for what you love

But his young eyes have seen too much

Till you’ve been where he’s been

You wouldn’t understand

I hope you’ll never have to, my friend

He got the call, was back on the plane

To where he belongs that might sound insane

But his brothers are there, they can’t fight this alone

So they dropped him right there in the blood red sand

His best friend is locked and loaded in his hands

And the sergeant yells, “Boys, it’s time to go”

And he thought, it’s crazy being home

It’s crazy being home

It’s crazy being home

Crazy being home

It’s crazy being home

Mark Wills It’s Working

She don’t know how to work on her car

she just steps on the gas and it goes

me, I’m no technician but a little knob twisting

puts a song on my radio

and when it comes to love, we’re a lot alike, she and I

We don’t really know what we’re doin’

But we’re doin’ something right

cause it’s working

[Chorus:]

Working like a charm

Working like a dream

humming like a big well-oiled machine

chugging right along

steady and strong and certain

so far, so good, baby knock on wood

it’s working

Some folks tear a good love apart

just to see what makes it tick

and sometimes when they put it back again

the pieces don’t want to fit

that don’t mean I don’t ask every day

Honey, how we doin’

’cause I love to hear her say

It’s working

[Chorus]

Chugging right along

steady and strong and certain

so far, so good, baby knock on wood

[Chorus x2]
